We have exciting news!

United Way of Douglas County is partnering with community agencies to place AmeriCorps workers, and the Ballard Center is one of seven local organizations that will be a host site for this program, which will improve our capacity to serve economically disadvantaged and impoverished community members.

The AmeriCorps member assigned to Ballard will work with our Family Stabilization Program. All too often, we encounter families where the loss of income due to illness, job turnover, or other family hardship puts the family in a financial crisis. We provide Douglas County families with financial assistance for rent and utilities. The Family Stabilization Program also provides community members with a pantry stocked with food, clothing, diapers and personal care items. A bi-monthly mobile food pantry at the Douglas County Fairgrounds is facilitated by Ballard in partnership with Harvesters.

Specific projects and opportunities within this position:

  • Address the needs of pantry clients through one-on-one communication to increase understanding of circumstances and link individuals to services provided by the Ballard Center and/or community partners.
  • Establish an effective data gathering process to understand gaps in knowledge about service delivery.
  • Interview pantry clients to better understand their life situation and how pantry services help them and their families.
  • Reach out to other mobile food pantries in the community to learn about their outreach efforts and implement findings.
  • Work with community organizations to increase pantry donations of high need items.

The Ballard Center has been an essential fixture in Douglas County for decades. Established in 1965 to serve disadvantaged youth, the Ballard Center’s mission is to partner with families to achieve stability through early childhood education and needs-based services. These services strengthen families and create lasting change.

AmeriCorps members serve a vulnerable population and must be cleared by background checks before unsupervised interactions with clients. Members gain valuable nonprofit experience while leading exciting projects that provide food, shelter and resources to low-income families, develop literacy skills for children, create volunteer and service opportunities for our community, and more. The AmeriCorps is the domestic equivalent of the Peace Corps.

In exchange for one year of full-time service, full-time members earn a living allowance up to $549.19 bi-weekly. Members also earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (equal to the maximum Pell Grant for a full-time service term) that can be used to repay qualified student loans or pay for college or trade school.
