Did You Know?

What We Are:

We are a private non-profit.
We are a business.
We are growing and changing to meet community needs.
We exist on private donations to do the work of the community.

What We Are Not:

We are not Federally funded.
We are not state funded.
We are not a hand out for clients.

What We Do:

We provide over a half of a million services in Douglas County each year.
We provide hope.
We help put the pieces back together for people in crisis.
We keep people from becoming homeless.
We help the sick get well.
We keep people from being hungry.

Who We Help:

The homeless
The children
The Working Poor
Families
The Elderly

Did You Know That:

Individual giving has declined over the past two years?
Each month the Ballard Center can only help about one-quarter of those needing assistance?
100% of the money donated to the Ballard Center goes to the children and families that we serve?
We need your help more than ever?
Each year we set and meet stringent outcome measures?

What are our Long-Term Goals?

To build a new infant/toddler early education center for low-income families.
To start a Foster Grandparent program.
To continue working with the community to enhance the delivery and administration of non-profit human service programs.
To continue improving the quality of our early education program by committing our efforts to the support of our college educated teachers.

"I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which one has overcome while trying to succeed."

Operation T.O.Y.S.
(Take Our Youth Shopping)

Ballard Community Services partnered with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Police Department, Kansas University Office of Public Safety and Kansas Highway Patrol for Operation T.O.Y.S. (Take Our Youth Shopping) on Friday, December 16, 2011. This program paired 30 uniformed law enforcement officers from Lawrence and Douglas County with 37 children from the Ballard Community Services early education program to provide a positive interaction with law enforcement officers. The program was designed to provide positive interactions with law enforcement officers.

The Law Enforcement Officers assisted the children with purchasing holiday gifts for their family members. Prior to going shopping the officers and children had breakfast at McDonalds located on west 6th street. After completing their shopping, the children then had an opportunity to look at the different law enforcement agency vehicles. The shopping for this event was funded by Hallmark, breakfast by McDonalds and transportation by First Student.
